Clicking on timeline changes graphics to results of selected election year.
In state-wise mode, clicking on state-circles show performance of individual parties/ alliances in that state in the table and plot (on right of map).
In constituency-wise mode, clicking on constituency-dots show winning parties in recent past elections. Datasets for elections before 1996 are not included.

Assumptions

States: Since 1^st election, geography and name of many states have changed. Common-sense simplifications were preferred over accurate descriptions to avoid complexity and resulting confusion. For example, Lok sabha seats belonging to states of Bhopal, Vindhya, Madhya Bharat and Madhya Pradesh in 1952 elections have been combined and represented by Madhya Pradesh in this graphic. State names as known in January 2014 are used, i.e. new states/UTs like Telangana, Ladakh, etc. has not been marked separately.
State circles: In state-wise mode, area of state circles are proportional to lok sabha seats of specific states.
Constituency dots: In constituency-wise mode, each dot (small circle) represents one constituency. Geographical location of some constituecy may be slight away from their true location, especially in densly populated regions.
Delimitation: Boundaries of lok sabha constituencies were redrawn several times, most recently in 2008. In cases, where name of consituency has not changed in 2008 delimitation (e.g. New Delhi constituency), they were considered to be same for the purpose of graphic showing trend of past winning parties.
Alliances: Only pre-poll alliances have been considered in this graphic. Alliances were considered since 1977, 1996 and 1999 elections for Communists, BJP & Congress, respectively.
Line Plot: BJP and its predessors Janta Party and Bhartiya Jan Sangh have been considered one entity, while Congress and Congress (I) are considered same.
